Chakri

Chakri dance is one of the famous folk dances that are performed by Rajasthanis. It is a culmination of their vivid imaginations of colors and a rich heritage. There is so much color – be it in their dresses or in their dance and this is the case with the Chakri dance as well. The unique factor of the Chakri dance is that this is purely performed by the women of Rajasthan.  In fact the women are such experts that they dance for their livelihood.

Chakri is the dance of the tribe called Kanjars and  wherever Kanjars are, we can trace the presence of the Chakri dance as well.  This is very specific to the Chakri tribe. In particular they seem to inhabit the areas of Kota and Baran districts of Rajasthan.

The dancers wear colorful skirts with a lot of traditional Rajasthani mirror work and the whole group looks bright and colorful as they step up to start dancing.  They go in rounds at such speed that they keep spinning like lightning.  The Chakri derives its name from Chakra which means the wheel, and  the women move around really fast as they keep spinning like wheels.  The women cover a large floor area.

Since the dance is so fast and agile, the music is of utmost importance here.  The women also sing when they dance, or there is a group of singers who sing the folk dances for the Chakri dance.  The music has a high tempo and is absolutely accelerated. The music actually starts off slowly but keeps reaching the peak as the dance progresses.  Nagara and the dholak are two important instruments that are played on as accompaniments for the Chakri dance.
