Bharatnatyam

Come to Tamil Nadu, to hear the blissful jingle of the anklets and the thumps of the feet. And there you can witness an age old dance,Bharatanatyam being performed. Bharatanatyam is one of the oldest classical dance forms of India. A combination of nritta (pure dance),nritya(expressive dance) and natya(group dramatic dance),one will be amazed by the combination of strong but delicate footwork, bent knees, rigid and flexible hand gestures and beautiful expressions that can light up the room. “Bharata'' is a mnemonic for :bhava(expressions),raga(melody),tala(rhythm) and Natyam stands for dance. Many of the theoretical foundations for this dance form have been laid by Natyashastra, which was written by Bharata Muni.Originally known as Sadiraattam ,the Indian classical dance form Bharatanatyam is the modification of sadir by E Krishna Iyer and Rukmini Devi Arundale.

There are many forms of Bharatanatyam that have been adapted by different parts of the country. Though originated from Tamil Nadu, many states within India and even outside the country have been promoting this graceful dance form. It is certainly a delight to watch women and men dance to the beats of the cymbals, and it is indeed a blessing to watch and learn a dance form as pure as Bharatantyam.
