Bhavai

An exuberant depiction of Rajasthan’s beauty can be found in Bhavai. A dance form which is a combination of expression, balance and colour. It is a celebration of life itself, where the most mundane tasks such as filling water were incorporated as a celebration by the Bhils, Jats, Meenas and Kalbelias. The work that is often shadowed by male chauvanism requires immense will power, strength and balance. The source of inspiration for Bhavai is the plight of women where they have to walk miles to fetch water, in the age of feudalism and today.

The colorful costumes adorned alleviate the surroundings and provide a burst of energy to the arid surroundings. The women wear a ghaghra-cholis with colourful jewellry and carry upto 9 pots on their head! The men wear a traditional dhoti which is accompanied by a grand headgear and coloured jackets. The addition of swords, brass plates and even fire adds an exhilarating  climax.

Unfortunately these traditional art forms are dying, and organisations like Bhawai Lokkala Sansthan of Rajasthan have been set up to preserve and inculcate these dance forms. We, at Neysa, aim to promote such unknown forms which are the heart and soul of our culture.
