Bayalata

Travel to Karnataka to witness the perfect blend of dance, drama and poetry. Popular in the southern region of Karnataka, Bayalata which means “open theater drama” is a form of Yakshagana, in which Indian poeteries and mythological stories are showcased. It is considered as a dance form in honor of the deities. In this type of dance form, both men and women dance to mark the end of a harvest season. As the men and women dance, a narrator known as the “ Suthradhar” narrates the poem and story which makes this dance form visually and auditorily appealing. The stage is set before the temple or a sandy beach or an open field, in which a platform is made along with mango leaves, plantain and bamboo poles. A dance form as stunning as this should be promoted and taught to the masses to understand our rich history.
